Have a desire to learn

Some time ago, two years after i finished college (let`s just call the college, Rosa), i went back to collect some important documents and i met Josh.

He is still the same a13s i saw him.

Josh is one of the security guards of Rosa College which is known for producing top-notch professionals who exhibit high levels of professionalism.

He still wears the same type of shoes he used to wear two years ago and he complains of how little his salary is, like he used to. He hasn’t developed in any way.

This is really sad because despite him knowing and at times testifying of Rosa College`s ability to positively change people’s lives through empowering them with education, it still hasn’t rang a bell in his mind for him to improve himself through acquiring some education.

Because he is  always seated at the entrance of the college, Josh knows almost every current and former students of Rosa college and can narrate their successes and escapades during their college days, even giving examples of some big names in the country saying they were once students of the college.

Josh is just but an example of the plight of many youths in the country who don’t really see the importance of learning and developing themselves to become great people in life.

This reminds me of what S.P Bango of Empretec Zimbabwe said during a conference i recently attended held at University of Zimbabwe, organised by the Ministry of Youth, Indigenisation and Economic Empowerment.

Bango talked of two critical factors, Endogenous and Exogenous that influence success in business and in life in general.

  • Endogenous – internal to the entrepreneur or enterprise –  entrepreneur has control
  • Exogenous– external to the enterprise – entrepreneur has no control but in some instances can exercise some degree of influence.

Explaining the endogenous factors, Bango said that as the youths in business or the entrepreneur of that SME, we should have an undying passion to learn more about our industries and develop ourselves.

You are there and you are running your small company. You need to take advantage of the various learning institutions in the country and learn more about your industry and grow your business.

This also applies to you who is thinking of establishing your own organisation. Take some ample time to learn, even from those who are in the industry you want to engage in

You have your thing going on and everything moving well. That`s not an excuse for you not to develop yourself in your area of specialty. The world is really changing fast especially in terms of technology and you need to be well read  to ensure that you are always up to date.
